  1. District Of Columbia

  2. D.C. is the state: District of Columbia; Washington is the only city in D.C. and as such is the city and state capitol, as well as the U.S. capitol and seat of U.S. federal power.

  3. Our nation's capital is located in the District of Columbia, a special entity located on the Potomac River, wedged in between Maryland and Virginia.  The founders of our country, including George Washington, decided that the capital should not be in any state, as that would give too much prestige and power to the state it was in.

The city of Washington used to be one of several small cities in the District of Columbia.  These days, the borders of the city of Washington and the borders of the District of Columbia are the same.

To make things confusing, there's also a state on the west coast named Washington.

  4. Because it is the "District of Columbia".

(i.e... Washing - DC. Los Angeles - CA. Norfolk - VA...)

  5. it just means District of Columbia

  6. formally the District of Columbia(D.C) and commonly referred to as Washington, the District, or simply D.C.

The City of Washington used to be a separate municipality within the District of Columbia. An Act of Congress in 1871 created a single government for the entire federal territory, effectively merging the City and the District into a single entity. It is for this reason that the city, while legally named the District of Columbia, is known as Washington

  7. DC stands for District of Cloumbia

  8. Washington is just a state and has nothing to do with the initials D.C. but Washington D.C. is our capital of the United States of America and its initials stand for District of Columbia which is named after Columbus.

  9. Washington D C ...District of Columbia  AS Columbus is to Ohio & Dallas is to Texas

  10. Washington is the name of the town; but the special area it's in, which is officially not part of any state, is called the District of Columbia. These days they are pretty much one and the same.

At one time, a lot of people called the United States (or even all of North America) "Columbia" after Columbus, instead of "America" after Amerigo Vespucci. So we have DC, the Canadian provence of British Columbia, the song Hail Columbia, Happy Land, and so on. What with there being a country named Columbia in South America, this isn't done much anymore.
