Why is there a hole at the back of a one-piece swimsuit?

It's not on some suits. Some suits, long taper suits in particular, come in versions that the entire back is covered. Normal suits are like that because it cuts out extra fabric, making them cheaper to make without hurting the suit's performance. It's really the one place you can cut off fabric without being risque!

What do you mean like a hole that wasn't supposed to be there then i would say at the one spot the fabric was wearing thin.

If you mean like a cut-out one piece swimsuit then its because some people like to show off their back.

The general type of swim suit you show was introduced by Speedo in 1976 (the straps were different, but it featured the same "hole"). I had a teammate who almost wouldn't wear it (we were given the suits for free) because it showed so much more skin than previous styles.

Before the X-back suit, the common racing swimsuit style came up high between the shoulders (a T shape similar to what the LZR has now). The most common style prior to that had a U-shaped scoop in the middle of the back.

My theory is that X-back styles (like you showed) are easier to fit a wider range of body types (you don't need a PERFECT fit). The small of the back (where the "hole" is) is a difficult part of the body to fit. If there is no fabric there, you don't have to worry about a close fit or water sloshing in/out.

theres a hole in the back of a one peice swim suit becuase when they are the brand speedo they usually are used for competitve swimming and when theres a hole theres less drag so it makes you swim faster and no just because theres less fabric it doesnt mean tht its chepaer most of those kind of suits are around 60-100 dollars!
