Why is there a less chance of having a topic when it comes down to 2 people talking.?

I believe in "the more the merrier" quote but why is it, when only two people are talking, getting a topic to talk about is quite difficult?

  1. . Simple. When only 2 ppl are present, the choices of conversation are most limited.

    Plus in a crowd, we're more relaxed.
