  1. there could be a number of reasons.  It could be just for looks, as part of the ride.  Or, if the theme park does not have lakes or water features, it could be a water source for fire fighting protection.  It could be a runoff retention pond.  A coaster area, being mostly off limits to the public, could be one of the few spots of available real estate to put it.  Some rides have water brakes but I do not believe coasters require water themselves.

added: having looked closely at your photo link, I can conclude that I haven't a clue.  It's not placed as a feature, it's not a water supply since there's a lake nearby, it's a small coaster not requiring water brakes and it's above ground.  Good question, don't know.

  2. I've heard that they are there to sooth people. That if people think they are going to fall, in their eyes they are falling into the water so it will be ok. I'm not sure if this really is the function or not, but I've heard people talk about it before.

  3. They just want to make you think that u will get wet, to thrill you, in my mind i think its really stupid.

  4. uhh... what roller coaster are you talking about??? i've never seen a pool of water in any!
