It is there so that a man can lift the seat while he pees.

I think it is there or not there! so if anyone wees on the seat it will go on the toilet and not on the seat for someone else to touch by accident. Eww! More hygienic i think.

so if you are standing up peeing and you say oh c**p i forgot to put the toilet seat up when im peeing like my wife always tells me to do, you can put the seat up without having to stop peeing.

The seats were made that way to accommodate the mans huge - - pogo stick? It was made by a Man who thought he was God's Gift to Woman! It should have been a magnifying glass instead.

I have always wondered that, but I think it would have to have something to do with hygene? But I never sit on a public toilet anyway so it doesn't matter.

they install them thinking they are more hygeinic but I don't think it is because many women squat over the seat and pee all over it anyway

I always thought that when a drunk was puking in it that it would not hit them in the back of the neck.  I'm probably wrong, but that is what I always thought it was for.

It probably has to do with manufacturing costs.  Take one tenth of a toilet seat out, reduce the cost..they make so many seats!  Either that, or it's where the plastic gets snapped off from its mold and gets polished down.

For comfort I'm guessing. Or with what the dude said above hygiene, as some people drip if you get my drift when they stand.
