Why is there a unswitched supply in lighting systems?

I get u need a ve and a neutral but what is the black wire for?

  1. To carry power through to other items on the circuit.

    In some systems with emergency back-up modules,

    the unswitched power is there as an 'indicator' to

    prevent acitvation of the emergency modules when the

    lights are switched off and to maintain battery charge.
