Why is there a usb port on my cable box?

  1. Universal Serial Bus ports are commonly found on Cable boxes that contain a hard drive inside and m-peg processing(TiVO or Digital Video Recorders) the USB port is for An Additional external hard drive and or Device. I'm sorry but it would me cool if you could record a show and then transfer it to your PSP for viewing later (maybe some thought should go into it for the future DVR's)...


  2. Mine has that too.  I called my cable provider and they said that the hardware is there, but the programming that is downloaded to provision the cable box disables the USB and firewire ports as well as certain other internal and external hardware features.

    The cable box is basically a flavor of Linux thin-client OS and the provisioning only enables certain features in favor of the cable provider and copyright laws.

    Sorry, your cable box is also most likely crippled also
