Question:

Why is there a weird taste in my mouth after/during running?

I don't think it's blood or anything. I usually get this taste less and less as I get used to regular running, but in the beginning, I just wonder what it is all the time..... Could that be anything else other than blood? After other types of physical activity I don't have that happen to me... Strange...

Any ideas? THANKS! :D

  1. it seems to be pretty common (the metallic taste), If you do any kind of endurance exercises .

  2. I dont really know what it is but I'm thinking when you are running if you are sweating a lot you could be tasting the salt and nutrients that are leaving your body as fun as that sounds. Thats the only thing I can think of.

  3. You're assumably breathing deeper in general and through your mouth at times so something could happen that way.

Otherwise your circulation is generally going differently with diversion to your extremities rather than internal organs, and change with your blood/circulation could lead to whatever you're experiencing.

You're also generally getting dehydrated so it could be the change of the saliva in your mouth. (The bad bacteria gain a foothold over the good in such a state.)

I've read some places that irritated nasal/throat passages (and small capillaries bursting) can lead to a running "taste." Some also think there can also be ketosis due to lack of carbs, and potentially ties to lactic acid buildup.

There are a number of web references out there regarding metallic tastes and endurance events, so you're certainly not alone in what you experience.
