I was just wondering what purpose it served, does it have anything to do with the rotation of the earth or something scientific like that?

  1. A windsock or wind cone is a conical textile tube designed to indicate wind direction and relative wind speed. Windsocks typically are used at airports and at chemical plants where there is risk of gaseous leakage.

It may also used by helicopter pilot to indicate wind speed.
