Why is there an 18 hole playoff instead of sudden death at this weekends US open in San Diego?

i think thats a much better format than any other touranment.  The dumbest sudden death being the TPC Sawgrass where they play the 17th

Because sudden death is the PGA way to have playoffs.  This is the championship of the USGA.  They do it their own way.

for one, its a way of getting a h**l of a lot more money. secondly, for a championship so big, it's hard to determine the true winner by just a sudden death playoff
