Question:

Why is there an ER symbol on the hillside near Baslow?

On a recent visit to Baslow, Derbyshire, I noticed the letters ER set in two squares, presumably of trees or bushes on a hillside.

I assume the letters ER are Elizabeth Regina, was it put there for a particular celebration?

  1. Isn't Baslow near Chatsworth House? If so, Chatsworth is obviously a royal property. Maybe there's some link between that and the ER symbol you saw...??

Have a look at this Wikipedia page. There could well be some information in it that may help.

  2. Hmm, were you looking at Hardwick Hall?

Bess of Hardwick was a right old character, she was a respected rival/sorta friend of Good Queen Bess.

When she got her 4th husband (I think) to re-build the Hall, she had her initials set into the roof parapets, as ES - Elizabeth Shrewsbury. You can see them for miles, just as the old girl intended!

"Hardwick Hall - More glass than wall" ran the rhyme. Under Bess o' Hardwick's iron fist, Hardwick Hall was the first building that was lit by seriously big glass windows.

Look her up for more stories!
