Same reason 'Family Guy' has a talking dog and a murderous baby. Because it's a comedy and the alien makes things weirder - ergo more humor potential.

the alien saved stans life in area 51, so he took him out of captivity and keeps him at his home. the question is, why is there a talking goldfish? now thats a lot freakier
