Why is there classes when it comes to obtaining a driver's license?

I've was looking to obtain a driver's license, which is Class C. But I found out that the trade I want requires a Class A or B license. Now I hate the DMV for their tricky ways.

Why is there different types of driver's license?

Usually having to do with driving certain types of vehicles. Here in Maryland you need a different license to drive an 18wheeler than a passenger car or light truck. Same for motorcycles. It has to do with the level of skill required to operate them.
