  1. the reason you have black hair is because of the cells in the hair follicles called melanocytes producing the dark pigmentation. sometimes due to age or the cell cycle (death and hasn't been replaced yet) the hair follicle no longer produces the pigment or produces less of it. that's why you get the half and half.

    when the follicle was producing the pigment your hair was black, then when some of the melanocytes died off half way, it became orange as there was less cells producing the pigment.


  2. perhaps you are part calico.  but seriously, it's all genetics.  my facial hair is black, blonde, and grey...  but the "carpet and drapes" are brown.
