I'm really concerned about this problem and I never thought it existed until my brother told me and I was absolutely shocked. Can anyone explain why we have high illiteracy? It seems kind of unlikely but it's a painful truth.

  1. Totally completely extremely absolutly really AGREE with Gigi

  2. Many think that illiteracy is related to financial abilities, actullay not or not totally.

In Egypt you could find in each small village what we called "kuttab" which runs by the village and there is a Sheikh who teaches kids How to read, write basic math beside Quran and religion of course.

I am not sure about Christians but I would guess that they also have similar system in small Churches in villages . But someone can elaborate.

The cost for the people to send their kids to these places was just maybe few cents or some eggs or food,..etc. so it was quite easy and affordable for families.

Now when Government kindly built a lot of schools in every village, families could simply not afford the uniform and the private lessons,...etc. at the same time the "Kuttab" disappeared ! + the education system is a disaster anyway.

It is a big problem and we are not talking about people who can't use the Computer, we are talking about people who can't read or write at all.

    This is only my opinion.

    Edit:

@Gigi: thumbs up for your positive thinking. You are absolutely right about people Volunteering to help in improving the situation. I think it is always easy to blame than do something.

    .

  3. cuz high number of Egyptian believe that religion should be everything and the only thing, and no need for science or knowledge.

  4. It Annoys Me When Egypt Builds A Library As Grand As Bibliotheca Alexandria When Egypt Could Have Put This Money In Making more People Literate

Currently there is Only 65% of Females and 80% of Males Able To Read.

    (((((((Edit))))))

    A Thumbs down, interesting!

  5. hey m and u  its nice to see u here again

i want to say for all people that say bad words about the goverment

because u wont change it by these bad words

if u really care about egyptians  then go and volonteer in any gam3ya khayrya and teach this ppl how to read and write, instead of cursing the goverment

  6. Hey there M & U,

It is a well known fact that countries where poverty rates are high illiteracy rates tend go in a parallel direction and vice versa. illiteracy tends to prevail in low income countries where severe poverty is widespread. Also taking into consideration the high increase in population (especially among the lower "less income" societies where they treat kids as a money making source as in Child labor) adds to the final figures of illiteracy in any country not just Egypt.

However it is worthy to note that the level of literacy worldwide has increased tremendously over the last few years.... quote "The world’s adult literacy rate – the number of literate persons expressed as a percentage of the total adult population – increased from 56% in 1950 to 70% in 1980, 75% in 1990 and 82% in 2000-2004. On recent trends, the adult literacy rate should reach about 86% by 2015." unquote.

So as you see, it is more than likely that the bad economic condition along with the increase in population are the reasons behind this high rate and it is no surprise at all that this is the case in almost all developing countries.

  7. is it among men, or women?  does it have anything to do with class or religion systems?  i know that a lot of Muslim countries have high illiteracy among women because they are treated as 2nd class citizens.  also among Christians, because they are seen as less than equals.

  8. okay 1st of all mad ppls answers are offending:

2nd of all i will tell u an unbiased answer: i wont get all philisocpical but  here wat i now for a fact, egypt economy and proverty line is degradeing more ppl r become poor. durning the gerneration of our parents and their parents and their parents ppl knoew basic writing reading basic math science and history alot of ppl even now dont get an aducation y well for 2 main reason

    1) simply cant afford it,  would rather work to get money now than(which leads to option 2)

    2) actually get an education then graduate and have no job and sit in the ahawy doing nothing with their degree. not becuz they dont wnt to but becuz they dont have a job oppurtunity...and if they are employed its usuall has NO relation with the degree they earned

    3) going back to the money issue job oppurtunies are more broad for ppl who havecomputer skills nad speak various languages mainy french and english in addition to arabis....u dont learn this in school so u have to go out of ur to learn sumthing and even THEN ur not guarnteed a job.

now to b clear im talin aboy main cities....in the very very VERY ppor fellahin place im not sure since im not frum there!

  9. Many Egyptians won't accept this fact but the truth is majority of the population is over-religious and don't see the importance in education.

Women are among the majority of illiterates because of the extremist ideology that women are "inferior" and should stay at home.

For boys they are send to madrassas where they learn nothing but get brainwashed.

Unfortunately this has been the story for Egypt in recent times there have been some improvements though but definately have a long way to go.

Also its not nescesarily true that lack of education is solely based on economic problems as some has mentioned there are countries whose economic conditions are worse than Egypt but have high literacy rates.

  10. I am lebanese and I was shoked by the figures it was something around 40% this is a painful thing to know I blam the goverment for not making education up to a certain age compulsory

  11. poor families in the country prefer to send their children, boys and girls to work in fields than go to school.

many of the illiterate humans are bright  when they grow up, but lose the ability to learn to read or write .

i have encountered them in Cairo , and i dont know what to do for them.

learning seems to be easiest at an early age .
