  1. The NRL is in the latter stages of where the AFL is heading. It was changed and broken up into codes in order to sustain an unsustainable number of teams.

Would 2 Victorian AFL teams please just go away and let the competition live? Does the term "greater good" not mean anything? I don't care which two (not Geelong though) but logic suggests the teams that can't be trusted to manage their accounts properly are costing the code and should be the ones who should be cut off.

  2. Sorry, I have to disagree with Conda, AFL is fantastic to watch on TV and prefer it sometimes....but thats just me!

anyways, its a rhetorical question, AFL is the superior sport in Australia and NRL struggles coz its boring both live and on TV.

  3. haha x2 with duff85

he just ripped you afl supporters apart.

THE STATS DONT LIE, NRL is more popular on TV. period.

as far as AFL taking over NSW and QLD, HAH not likely mate, give it another 200 years and we'll see.

People outside of Sydney think the swans are doing good because they get some 30,000 crowds, but dont forget they are the ONLY team in sydney, you have 10 NRL teams that average 15-20,000.

I dont see how AFL is entertaining to watch, its just a bunch of skinny people running around kicking a ball, no big tackling or anything. THEY GIVE YOU POINTS FOR MISSING THE GOALS. wtf is up with that...

Well thats my 2 cents anyway, ciao!

BTW: state of origin in 2006 attracted 50,000 in melbourne..not to shabby

  4. Because in Melbourne they have nothin else 2 do and it is a cold sh.it hole. what nutcase wud wana freeze there ar$e off and watch a game of AFL lol crazy. Duff85 ur the man, ratings dont lie and NRL is numba 1

  5. This is a trolling question. But I think some non-trolls would be interested in an answer.

For me its a culture thing. The AFL has always been about driving for member's etc and making their money that way. Whereas the Rugby League has relied on the TV money provided from its NRL competition and television showcase event State of Origin.

The other reason is that the Super League war did a lot of damage to Rugby League's credibility and the AFL were smart to capitalise on disenfrachised Rugby League fans.

These things have combined to make AFL the most popular sport in Australia. I also think that it is still a distant second to Rugby League throughout New South Wales and Queensland and highly doubt that it will ever surpass the NRL in popularity in these area's.

Just to correct some false information provided in someone's opinion above:

The Rugby League had three of the top 10 most watched broadcasts on free to air television in 2007. Including the Rugby League Grand Final being watched by more people then the AFL Grand Final.

On Foxtel - eight of the top ten broadcasts were NRL matches and  Rugby League had 73 of the top 100 broadcasts, the Rugby Union had the other two top ten spots... it really didn't leave much room for the AFL which had 3 broadcasts rate in the top 100 broadcasts on foxtel. Pretty clear that the Rugby League is far more popular on television, but the AFL is far better at negotiating better television deals by the looks of things.

  6. yes, its actually rather sad.

people at school are always saying to me that AFL is 'GAYFL' and all of type of bullsh*t.

but when the AFL has the highest audiences on TV, more numbers at the SCG for a swans game rather than across the road at SFS, I just laugh!

  7. Super League drama in the 90s killed rugby league as a spectator sport. This happened at the same time that Sydney became a force in the AFL - now we have the situation where the Swans can draw more people to one game than the whole round of rugby league games in Sydney.

In 2006, Sydney drew 82,000 to their semi final against Fremantle (and if it had been a Melbourne team they would have had 100,000). On the same weekend they had 22,000 to a rugbbe league semi final. This in the supposed home of rugby league.

Parents are becoming sick of league because of the thuggery (i.e Craig Wing on the weekend) and I think what we will see over the next 5-10 years is League drop behind rugby union and the disappear as a major sport in Australia.

In Canberra, they get about 4,000 to a game although they lie about the crowd and say there was 11,000. Most of the tickets are giveaways too.

  8. Manuka Oval holds no more than 10,000 and I don't think it's ever hit that number.  Maybe for Cricket, but Cricket is boring anyway.

Bruce Stadium holds 25,000 for Raiders & Brumbies game.

AFL will never take over in the ACT

So Forky, the Mexicans do not have a better game.  And it started from Irish Football, so it wasn't invented here

  9. Yeh I'm from melbourne and i saw it as well. The stadiums were empty for opening round!! I can guarantee afl crowds will be huge this weekend. AFL averages at least 30,000 a game. NRL is gone cos the real footy is taking over.

  10. i go to nrl games in melbourne and they got about 15,ooo

  11. just think taht AFL is the better game

  12. maybe you should have done some research first

the week-end just gone by round 1 NRL

Sth Sydney v Easts got 29,386

    Parramatta v Canterbury got 25,065

Gold Coast v Nth Qld got 26,974

    Brisbane v Penrith got 31,250

not bad considering all games are shown live in Sydney and Brisbane live on Foxtel and Ch 9

  13. Its obvious mate,The Vics have the better game and a truly Aussie invented one at that, better marketing better kids programs like aus kick etc and you don't have to be a giant to play it.I enjoy watching the Storm but its nowhere near a exciting as going to a Carlton - collingwood game with 85,000 + cheering fans

  14. because Rugby is a sub-standard English game

    and AFL is Australian

  15. League is better to watch on TV and AFL is better to watch at the ground.

Any non-league supporters who start the "our game is better" chant have an inferiority complex about their game. NSW and QLD have embraced all four codes of football, the fact that the southern states are struggling to do so doesn't say much about their famed "sports mad culture".
