  1. the enzymes that degrade starch do not work under the acidic conditions of the stomach.  starch digestion that begins in the mouth continues in the intestine when more enzymes are added from pancreatic juice

There is little or no digestion of starch in the stomach because the stomach contains gastric acid, which digests proteins.  This acid is unable to break down starch chemically,  The starch is broken down when it enters the small intestine because the secretions, such as pancreatic amylase, in the small intestine are able to break it down.
