  1. The coast starlight runs from LA to Oakland which is a short trip to Frisco by bus or bart train. You can also go to San Jose and then ride the commute train to Frisco

  2. you might  be looking at the wrong packages

Amtrak has trains to Oakland (and its a short bus ride from Oakland to San Francisco

using the Coast starlight train (which continues to Seattle)

you might have been looking at packages using the pacific

surfliner which goes to San Luis Obispo then bus

another routing to Oakland is via the San Joaquin trains

(which a is  bus to Bakersfield then train to Oakland

  3. Not true! The Coast Starlight is a daily direct train between Southern California and the Bay Area. Additionally, the Pacific Surfliners operate between San Diego, LA and San Luis Obispo with only a short bus continuation up to San Jose and the rest of the Bay. The San Joaquin's also provide service between Southern California and the Bay area with only a two hour bus connection necessary for the portion over the grapevine between LA and Bakersfield. Again,, if you do want an "All Train" trip just take the Coast Starlight.
