maybe you are just looking in the wrong part of the uk , here in leicester there are loads advertised everyweek in the mercury on weds job section , for hgv class 2 drivers.

This depends on how and where you look Basingstoke has loads,as does Reading and Newbury.

there are plenty of jobs in those categories?  check local press, job centres etc..

l cant say anything about engineers, but all over the country firms are crying out for hgv drivers. l used to be registered with 3 agencies and to this day l get at least 3 calls a week offering me jobs, it seems to make no difference to them that l gave up my little brown book purely and simply because the money they offered was so rubbish, l mean £5-50 an hour is verging on the ridiculous. l was earning more than that 20yrs ago. l wouldnt get out of bed for 550 an hour, would you?

There are loads of jobs going in Hinckley n also Leicester...try Hammonds and Widdowsons...
