Why is there no lightning in California, but there is thunder and lightning on the east coast?

Just the other day we had thunder and lightning here in Southern California.  We don't get it as often as the east coast nor the south, but we do get it.  Tropical storms in July and August are great in the Sierras.  Lots of rain,  too.

I live in the lightening capital of the country, (South East) and i don't know why.  When it rains, it is always a thunderstorm.  I wish it would just rain.
