Question:

Why is there no mention of a quran-alone movement in Islamic history?

If hadiths really are bid'ah, wouldn't there have been major opposition and riots against such blasphemy? The conflicts over civil war and early sects like khawarij, shia etc. are well documented. But nowhere is there any solid mention of a widespread quran-alone movement.

If everyone originally was quran-alone, are we meant to think that somehow *all* of the muslims got deceived to believe in the bid'ah hadith system?

  1. All ahadith of the Prophet (saw) are sahih (genuine). But some people fabricated some ahadith on their own to suit their interests. We cannot do what you are saying because we cannot rely on the Qur'an without the help of ahadith, because ahadith are the interpretations of the Qur'an.

  2. Hadiths occupy a place of importance in the structure of Islamic teaching.

The Qur'ãn in this regard says:

"You have indeed in the Apostle of ALLAH(SWT), a beautiful pattern (of conduct). (S.33 V.21)

'Hadith' meaning 'a saying' or 'a report'...

    'Sunnah' means ' the practice'.

    The Qur'ãn:

"He who obeys the Prophet(SAW) obeys ALLAH(SWT)." (4:80)

"For (the Prophet(SAW) commands them what is just and forbids them what is evil. He allows them as lawful what is good and prohibits from what is bad." (7:157)

It is thus clear that the Qur'ãn and Hadith's cant be separated!

Source of Islamic law is built on the Qur'ãn, Sunnah of the Prophet(SAW), the Ijma (consensus of opinion of learned jurists) and Qiyas (inference by analogy).

Most authoritative books of Hadith are:

    1: The Sahih of Bukhari (194-256 A.H)

    2: The Sahih of Muslim (202-261 A.H)

    Four other books also recognized:

    3: Abu Daud.

    4: Tirmidhi.

    5: Nisai.

    6: Ibn Majah.

(Known as the 'The Accurate Six' Sunan books of Hadiths).

  3. This is a question best asked in the free-minds.org forum but I'll try my best to answer it. Remember at the time there was no such thing as a "quran-alone movement" their was only the moslems. The overwhelming majority in the early centuries post muhammad were just that and didn't need to address themselves as anything but.

he hadith originally came from a benign purpose. The sahaba and early converts who helped spread the religion most likely remembered the sermons and memorable sayings that elaborated on Quranic verses and principles. Remember even in the Quran it is clear that although he was forbidden to explain the quran, he did elaborate and meditate on the Quran and preached at the Masjid and their are indeed many hadith that concur with the teachings of the Quran which makes it plausible that they were the true words of Muhammad.

These early converts and the sahaba who spread the religion to others while also espousing the Quran, would slip in a prophet muhammad saying which helped them, thinking that it would do the same to others interested in Islam. Soon though, when these people passed away, like the phone game, over time saying that weren't from the prophet wer attributed to him, and the ones that he did say were lost in translation of other languages or misinterpreted. So that by the time the first Hadith were collected, some 200 years later, the saying attributed to muhammad were mostly false and conjecture.

Remember by the time of bukhari shiasm, sunnism, and many other sects had flourished creating an irreperable schism that led to the glorification of Idols that said sects championed.

  4. Actually there is mention of the "Quraan only" group of people in Islaamic history.

Allaah mentioned them in the Qur'aan in Surah al-Nisaa: 115:

    وَمَنْ يُشَاقِقْ الرَّسُولَ مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا تَبَيَّنَ لَهُ الْهُدَى وَيَتَّبِعْ غَيْرَ سَبِيلِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ نُوَلِّهِ مَا تَوَلَّى وَنُصْلِهِ جَهَنَّمَ وَسَاءَتْ مَصِيراً

((And whoever contradicts and opposes the Messenger after the right path has been shown clearly to him, and follows other than the believers' way. We shall keep him in the path he has chosen, and burn him in h**l - what an evil destination))

The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said,

((There will be a man to whom my hadeeth will reach him, while he is sitting comfortably, and he will say between me and you is the book of Allaah, whatever we find in it that is halaal we will make it halaal, and whatever we find in it haraam we will make it haraam. Then the Prophet says: whatever the messenger of Allaah has made haraam is as if Allaah has made it haraam.)) (Sunan at-Tirmidhee 5/38)

The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) also said,

((All of my Ummah will enter heaven except those who refuse (or reject), so they asked him: oh messenger of Allaah, who is the one who refuses? The Prophet said: whoever obeys me will enter heaven and whoever obeys me he has refused.)) (Saheeh al-Bukhaaree, 7280)

Imaam adh-Dhahabee recorded in his Siyaar A’laam an-Nubalaa (11/297) that Imaam Ahmad bin Hanbal said:

من ردَّ حديث رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فهو على شفا هلكة

((Whoeever rejects a Hadeeth of the Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) then he is on the brink of destruction))

Imaam Aboo Ismaa’eel al Haraawee narrated in his Dhamm al Kalaam (228) that Imaam al-Humaydee who was the Shaykh and Teacher of Imaam al-Bukhaaree said:

والله! لأن أغزو هؤلاء الذين يَرُدُّون حديث رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم أحبُّ إلي من أن أغزو عِدَّتهم من الأتراك

((By Allaah, that I war against those who reject the hadeeth of the Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) is more beloved to me than that I should war against the same number of Non-Muslims))

These people have always been viewed as Kuffaar in the light of Islaam.

    Imaam as-Saaboonee narrated:

"I head Shaykh Abaa Bakr Ahmad bin Is-haaq bin Ayyoub al-Faqeeh and the was debating a man so Shaykh Aboo Bakr said: "So and So narrated to us" so the man said to him: "Leave off who narrated until when he narrated!" the Shaykh said to him: "Get up O Kaafir, for it is not permissible for you to enter into my house after this" Then he turned to us and said: "I never said to anyone to not enter my home except this one""
