it seems to me that it was a great introduction to engineering and apprenticeships but now kids leave school with no understanding or intrest in engineering at all!.

  1. Metalwork stopped at my school two years ago, since my school is now linked to a college which can offer better facilities and equipment for the subject. Students could take engineering at college in years 10-11.

Also I think it was not one of the most popular technology subjects that people took on for GCSE.

  2. Wow I can't believe they have stopped metal work. What about woodwork? So there will be a whole generation of mums who don't have a little copper spoon to treasure. THis is sad. Too busy teaching c**p like PSHE Citizenship and how to put condoms on.

  3. They've been merged into Design & Technology classes. There are plenty of people of school leaving age who have undertaken apprenticeships or degrees in it, or with an interest for engineering, I know quite a few myself.

  4. Someone probably said it was a health and safety risk in that they could injure themselves. I bet they also thought that if they merged all the design elements (metalwork, woodwork etc) together then they could save money.

It seems that those higher up the ladder only want to save money and protect their backs in case something goes wrong.

  5. Cos the silly powers that be want the kids to learn about islam.

  6. I got a Grade 2 in C.S.E. Metalwork back in May 1981 ! My Metalwork Theory was superior to my Metalwork Practical ! Other Pupils in my Metalwork class were able to produce better finished items than I could ! It was hard physical effort ! Stainless Steel is so hard to work & to bend !

  7. I couldn't agree with you more matey.  If people actually understood that enginneering stood for a massive part (or use to) of the countrys industry more people would take an interest in it at school.  Although with ever tighter restrictions on health and safety can kids today be allowed to work a lathe, mill or even a forger.  The great need for more highly efficient cars are not going to be invented and engineered by students who know nothing, but can make a paper masha head, play hamlet or have a degree in SPORTS SCIENCE (whatever the **** that is). Good question me old son.  All the best.
