Why is there only one energy company in Denver?

I recently moved to Denver and found out there was only one energy company Xcel. I moved from Houston where there is many choices of energy companies. Why is there only one energy company in Denver?

  1. look in the directory for a utilities commission for the city or county.  they will know why and such commissions are often receptive to input even if they cannot change the situation.  


  2. Until recently, low population spread over a large area made it difficult for one company to make money......lots transmission line and few customers in between....let alone two companies.  Wasn't all that long the main energy supplier in the Mid West and Rockies was REA, rural electrical association.

    At one time the gas and electric company were separate, then merged ..... don't know what the situation is now as I left when the city got too congested.  

      

  3. Texas has deregulated and the market is open to multiple companies.

    Oh by the way, Texas also has the highest rates in the country. So you figure how that is suppose to help us as consumers.
