Why is there scarless healing reproduced on mouse 3 years ago, but not for humans yet?

  1. 'Miracle Mouse' was genetically engineered. There are so many laws regarding genetic manipulation of humans (or human cells) that it could easily be another 20 years before that type of scarless healing is available in mainstream human medicine.

    The problem is that even if cells (eg lab-grown skin grafts) were produced that had the same characteristics as Miracle Mouse, scientists and doctors would then need permission to transplant these cells into a human being. The amount of testing necessary before THAT would be legal... it's mind-boggling. I pity the companies who are trying to develop products like that. Their expenses are staggering.

    There are a number of groups who have had success creating lab-grown skin products (using stem cells, synthetic matrices etc). I don't know if any of them have completely finished development and medical trials, but I think you can look forward to some good news about scarless healing soon.
