Why is there school in California getting budget cuts?

I don't get why there is such drastic budget cuts?

  1. I agree with the first response but also the governator has all his kids in private schools and doesn't care about the rest.

You know all those propositions we vote on in California elections?  Well, we've obligated the state to so many locked-in expenses, that it is hard to balance the budget.  So, there is a systemic problem that needs to be resolved.  In years when the economy is booming, we seem to do all right; although, in the last, boom, we were taken to the cleaners by Enron, so that left us without much money to see us through the economic decline.

    States spend money primarily on three things: schools, prisons, highways.  Three-strikes put a lot of people in prison, and as you know, California prisons are overcrowded and underfunded.  Not much left for schools, and the highways are in pretty lousy shape, too.

    So, what you vote on counts.
