  1. it's colder up north in the mountains.

  2. because when the altitude is higher, it is much colder. the higher the altitude, the colder the temperatures are. instead of rain, it will snow.

  3. At higher altitudes the decreased air pressure means that there's less air to be heated by the sun. The temperature generally drops about 3 degrees F per 1000 feet of altitude. This rate of temperature drop is called the thermocline. Less air pressure means there's more space in between air molecules and sunlight just passes right through these spaces.

  4. The atmosphere, in general, gets colder as you go up.  That's because the atmosphere is heated from below. The reason for this is because sunlight doesn't heat air directly since air is transparent to visible light (we can see through it) and what really gets heated is the ground.  Once the ground warms it can heat the atmosphere in a number of ways: by conduction, convection, and radiating infrared radiation back up that is absorbed by the atmosphere. Anyway the farther you get from the heat source (the ground) the colder it gets.  Mountains are in contact with high elevation air so they are colder.

  5. the higher the altitude the colder it is, so it stays really cold up there
