Why is there so much nastiness in retail jobs?

I worked in retail for over 10 years. I had to defend myself over & over against rude, mean, evil bosses & co-workers. Many (not all) people in that business think they have the right to treat you like c**p. You can't even ask a question without being stomped on & humiliated.

I'm fed up & not going back.

I call it a culture of nastiness. Why does this culture exist in retail?

(I'm not talking about customers, that's a whole different subject!)
