Why is there such a thing as skin color?

Where do all the different variations of skin color come from. I don't get it. Without sounding ignorant I'd like to ask--why are you white and why am I black yet we live in the same geographical region?

  1. Because difference is beautiful. If we all walked around the same color, how bland would life be? We might as well live in a monotone world. Even though ignorant people of this world try to set up barriers by color, it only feels THAT much better when we break through them.

*lol and i would BET MONEY that the people who gave me thumbs down are racist jerks. wow you are lameeee and need to update yerr selves. dis new era isn't with the racist c**p no more anyone who's racist is def. stuck in the past! lol

  2. ya i know its stupid u are who u are !

  3. Skin colour is determined by the amount of melanin in the skin. More melanin means darker skin. The indigenous populations of hotter regions tend to have darker skins than those in cooler places. The differences in the amount of melanin in the skin evolved according to the climate of those regions - more melanin helps protect the skin against damage from ultraviolet radiation (resulting in sunburn and eventually skin cancer), but is an impediment to vitamin D synthesis (a vital vitamin that is produced in the skin when exposed to sunlight). In cooler regions, it's necessary to have less melanin in the skin in order to synthesize enough vitamin D from the less intense sunlight, so the indigenous people there have lighter skin. We only have people with different skin colours living in the same geographical regions now because of the ease with which humans can move around the world. Their ancestors would have come from regions where their skin colour was selected for by the environment.

  4. ITS BECOZ OF MELANIN FORMATION.

those who have fair complexion the rate of melanin formation is slow. melanin r colour pigments.while for dark ones its rate is faster.

  5. Skin color is all about genetics. Melanin is what colors your skin (and hair and eyes) and gives your skin it's pigment. Those with a higher concentration of melanin have darker skin and those with a lesser concentration have lighter (pale) skin.

It is a common belief that human evolution caused people who live in tropical (very hot, sunny) climates to have a higher concentration of melanin because it helps protect the skin from ultraviolet rays so you don't get sunburn. Now that humans have stopped (for the most part) evolving, your skin color is mostly inherited from your parents through genes, regardless of geographic location.

  6. We all evolved black, in Africa.

As our species spread around the world, some mutations happened- some helpful for the environment (eg fat distribution- cold environments: store fat evenly over body as insulation. Hot environments: store it somewhere where it won't cause you to overheat eg buttocks), some irellevent (big noses).

The mutation that lead to paler skin didn't kill it's carriers, because they were living in an environment where the sun wasn't as strong, so it took hold.

The white europeans were the first to come up with the technology that enabled them to live longer and travel further, so they became dominent.

That's why we end up with Europeans in charge of America and Australia. They turned up and ousted their stone-age cousins.

  7. Because we were once isolated groups of people that evolved in differing environments. - different climates, altitudes, etc etc

...& for most of history we've been constrained to our originating environments.......It's only in relatively recent times that people have been able to travel to other regions of the world

    ....hence a mixing of peoples

  8. There is skin color so we can be distinguished from each othe..as how God created us..enjoy

  9. its related with genetics ,u see for each characteristic u have a gene or allele ,skin colour is example of co dominance which means that there are lots of variations in skin colour ,ur black because the allele for black skin colour is dominant in ur body .evolution may have occured in animals but do u think after thousands of years all the blacks in us or uk will change to white if they marry within each other

  10. because god didn't want everyone to be equal.

  11. Ask god he made us
