  1. more for women than for men, in that women often face pressure to 'dumb down'. both genders are sometimes 'tracked' into different educational areas, such as social/soft sciences for women and harder sciences/mathematics for men. for both genders, based on the social climate of the school, there may be pressure not to be 'too' smart in order to maintain a level of popularity with their peers which can lead some to underachieve. try google scholar. there are citations on the subject.

  2. Only if your weak willed and insecure.

  3. It is an important social issue because if the gap gets wider between the genders and one group is underachieving they may lose confidence and we would have an uneven society - Like we did when only boys were educated. Now girls are excelling and we need to find out why in order to have a balanced society.

  4. to some extent yes.

  5. How do you measure achievement and success. From a young persons point of view getting out of school alive is an achievement in itself some times.

There has been years of research into the effects of peer pressure, same and single s*x classes and multi stage learning techniques and hundreds of different ways of imparting knowledge and educating our younger generations. There are numerous factors that affect learning and achievement and peer pressure is one of them.

As to if peer pressure causes a problem that really depends on whether it is negative or positive pressure and how good the teacher is at controlling poor behaviour in class.

I don't hold with corporal punishment but when i was at school strapping was still allowed and we had a particularly vicious teacher who did like to beat the beejasus out of the kids. I wasn't too into being spanked in those days so i must say it did work as a deterrent for me.....but look what happened in later life lol
