i frequently visit my sister, and her cats are always friendly and love being fussed. I have been looking after them whist they have been on Holiday and all of a sudden the male has stared hissing and has bitten me for no reason he seems suddenly scared of me. what should i do?

  1. The're just not yet used to the sudden change...they must sense your 'sis' is away and have become a bit nervous.

  2. Snicker is right.

Do your best to "ignore" him while being very aware of his signals so you don't unintentionally provoke him.

He is doing his best to protect his territory and family with Mom gone. Let him know you know he's the boss and just give him a wide berth.

This helped a lot with my husband's kitty. She use to attack me all the time but now we get along just fine.

  3. Since you do not own the cat it might just be that he is having trouble being away  from his owners for a long time.

  4. if it continues, stay away!

  5. Try to be very nice and offer him something to eat/drink and show him that you are not trying to hurt him and just try to pet him

  6. i agree with snicker

  7. He may just have been spooked while you were not there and is "defending" his territory.  You may have kicked him or beaten him and then I am not surprised he is scared!  But most likely it is the former and he will settle once there is another more familiar person around.

  8. As you can see, cats are very emotional creatures. They can go from liking you to hating you... and hopefully to liking you again. This cat obviously feels threatened by you. Do you think he has a mate that he is protecting? This may be the problem. To stop it, let him sniff your hand, and give him treats often (treats may be little scraps of meat, dog treats, cat treats, or little pieces of cat food). After that, give him gentle pets and lots of attention. He should warm up to you soon.

  9. You are the antichrist

  10. The best thing to do is to ignore his hissing.  He is just upset that his routine and people are missing.  He will settle down when they come home.  He is telling you that he wants them and not you at this point in his life. He has no way of knowing that you are his life line right now.  Just don't give up on him please. He is very upset like a little child whose mom has been gone a long long time (to him a long time)
