I posted a little while back asking why a foul tip on the first 2 strikes isnt out but it is on the 3rd and you guys kindly explained now what i want to know is -

Why is a bunt foul with 2 strikes an 'out' but a normal foul shot with 2 strikes isnt, it doesnt seem to make sence when essentially the same thing is happening, ball hits bat, ball goes foul ?

  2. A foul tip into the catcher's mitt is seen as the same as a swing and miss, thats why only the third strike is an out.

The bunt rule was put in place to prohibit people from trying to bunt forever.

  3. When the foul is tipped to the catchers mitt is like missing the ball and it being a strike out

  4. b/c you are attempting to sacrifice on the most part, but it really applies to a batter who is trying to get a single by bunting.  so they cant just keep trying to bunt until they hit a good one. its one, two, three tries your out

  5. The rule for a foul tip is in place to prevent batters from being out on something that is almost the same thing as a simple swing and miss. If there was no exception for foul-tips, then the batter would be out anytime it happened because it would count as a foul ball that was caught before hitting the ground. Since the batter got such a small piece of the ball, its treated the same as a swing and miss. It counts as a strike, just like any swing and miss, if there are 2 strikes, then it counts as strike 3 and its a strikeout just like a swing and miss with 2 strikes. Basically, they're saying that the batter got such a small piece of the ball, that its no better than missing completely. This way the offense gets the advantage of not being out just because it was caught, but they get the disadvantage of the fact that it can still count as strike 3.

As for bunting, the rule is there to prevent 2 things:

1: Its pretty easy to direct a bunt to a certain spot. So a batter could intentionally bunt pitches foul until he eventually recieved 4 balls or got a pitch down the middle of the plate. The other problem would be that you could just keep bunting pitches foul to eventually wear out a pitcher.

2: In situations where you actually want to bunt, it prevents people from having unlimited opportunities to get the bunt down. Its pretty rare to see someone try to bunt and just completely miss the ball. If bunting foul didn't count as the 3rd strike, you would have almost unlimited chances to get the bunt down. Having a rule that allows a bunt foul to be strike 3 gives the pitcher a fair chance to get the batter out by limiting the batter to 3 chances to get the bunt into fair teritory.

  6. batter's would just bunt foul every pitch and the AB could go on until teh pitcher was exhausted of the batter can work a walk

  7. In a situation where a batter is sent up to bunt, it's very very very rare to miss. it's also relatively easy to hit a bunt foul.

the rule is what it is because:

    A. it would be way too easy to get a bunt in play without a foul ball counting as strike 3

    and

    B. when Johan Santana takes the mound and the pitcher is up with nobody on base they could just tell him to foul off as mnay bunts as possible (as i said, not terribly difficult for a major leaguer) and probably get him to a 10+ pitch at bat.

  8. I have no better answer than it is a rule.

Those two circumstances are particularly provided for in the rules.

  9. Because a player doesn't have to time a swing when bunting which make contact easier.  The AB could go on for a while and tire out the pitcher.

  10. So guys don't keep bunting forever.
