  1. I looked at all the many adverse effects of Robitussin (guaifenesin) and Motrin (ibuprofen). I found that the Motrin can cause kidney failure. I think that is probably over the long term but if you already had something going on I suppose it could have made it become suddenly worse, or bad enough that you finally noticed.

    From the site: http://www.medicinenet.com/ibuprofen/art...

"NSAIDs reduce the flow of blood to the kidneys and impair function of the kidneys. The impairment is most likely to occur in patients who already have impaired function of the kidney or congestive heart failure, and use of NSAIDs in these patients should be cautious."

Possibly you were already mildly dehydrated from the cold or flu or whatever you're fighting. This would greatly increase the concentration of Motrin in your kidneys.

If it were me, I would super-hydrate for a few days, especially if I was still fighting the original illness. That means NO diuretics like coffee, tea or soda pop. Drink MORE than the usual 8 glasses of water per day. Avoid heated exercise that will cause a lot of water loss (sweating & heavy breathing). Avoid sugar as that slows the immune system down. In a week or so when you feel better, might want to take a few doses of Silymarin (Milk Thistle Seed Extract) to help cleanse the kidneys and liver. Dandelion Root tea would be a good thing then, too.

And, of course, if your kidneys don't start to feel better in just 24 hours after starting this regimin, seek the counsel of your health care provider.

  2. If you know pop hurts your kidney, it is smart to stay away from it. But don't go back to it when you think it's all better. If you haven't seen the doctor yet, I suggest you do. It could be something wrong with your kidney when it absorbs the chemicals in the pop.
