Why is this when flying?

Ok when flying to visit my aunt and uncle from maine to phoenix arizona this happens.

When we leave the aiport and connect through another airport on the east coast it doesn't hurt my ears and give me a head ache when we land. When we leave the east coast and go to land in phoenix on the west coast my ears and head start to hurt really bad starting 20-25 minutes before landing and still hurt for a little while after landing. It's happened both times I went there in April 2006 & Fenruary 2008. Yeah I know your ears pop and all but it doesn't hurt except when landing in phoenix and I get the biggest head ache as well.

  1. I have the same problems. I think it has to do with specific airplanes, and the altitude you are flying at. When I am on shorter flights (which are sometimes smaller airplanes) I don't have much of a problem, but when I go across country I have issues.

You might have already tried these things, but as a reminder. Try chewing gum about 20-30 mins before landing begins. (just as you start to feel some decending) if you wait until your ears hurt then it's often too late.

Also sucking on hard candy, drinking a water bottle, swallowing will all help. Also sometimes I take an extra strength Tylenol or something 1 hour before landing too. With all of these things together I manage pretty well!

It's all so weird, I have no idea why it bother some people more than others...must be inner ear issues.

  2. Gum And Lolly Pop's Really Work! I Get A Really Bad Squeeling Noise When I Land And Cant Hear Properly For About 2 days, And I Get A Head Ache!! Also Try Having A Hot Shower That Helps Me!

    Good Luck!!

  3. Phoenix is just like that. You probably are dreading the fact that you're going back there.
