Question:

Why is unleaded gasoline still called unleaded?

Lead in gasoline was phased out more than 30 years ago. I had an old car that used leaded gasoline when they started phasing it out with unleaded. I wonder why they don't simply call it gasoline. Just curious. Thanks.

  1. There is still a need to differentiate between leaded and unlead gas.

Old-fashioned leaded gas is still available for antique cars which now include all the muscle cars of the 70s (sob!)

  2. Would you but it if it said leaded.  No? Well then they want to make good and sure you know.  Now go out and make someone richer. Buy the best. Buy unleaded and rest assured they got the lead out.

  3. that would probably be because it has no lead,

  4. in some places they still use "leaded gas"...

  5. Probably they still call it unleaded because that is what it is...sort of like unsalted peanuts...they have not salt added to them...unsweetened tea...there is no sugar in it...so it is called unsweetened...it is simple really.
