Why is unleaded plus cheaper than regular unleaded in North Dakota and South Dakota?

I'm traveling cross country right now and I've noticed that in North Dakota and South Dakota, the unleaded plus gasoline is the cheapest and unleaded regular is more expensive.

Why is this?

This seems so strange and counterintuitive to me.

In every other state I've ever been to, unleaded regular is the cheapest and unleaded plus is more expensive.

What the heck is going on in the Dakotas to make them do it backwards?

  1. It's because unleaded plus has ethanol in it Iowa and Illinois is doing the same thing the Unleaded has no ethanol in it and they dont really want you to buy it.

  2. ethanol

  3. maybe they are trying to clear the tanks... and  ...maybe the oil co needs to get rid of some so it tells the stations to move the plus...y not ask them??
