Why is unrefined Diesel 75p a gallon dearer than petrol.?

Will they say that their is no by products to sell on as apposed to Petrol??

  1. The correct answer is that Diesel is now more refined than petrol, the extra cost is reflected in the price.


    Many years ago diesels were smokey as diesel was a by-product and contained high levels of Sulphur. Newer diesel engines are much cleaner, partly due to evolution and partly due to more stringent emission laws.


    You will see that all UK diesel is 'Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel'. Taking most of the sulphur out of the diesel is an extra step and adds to the cost. This is why in many other countries that still use the lower-cost diesel the people there perceive diesels as being smokey.
