Why is violent turbulance expected when flying through Cumulonimbus? What causes it?

  1. Some of the worse turbulance is clear air turbulance and not a cloud in a sky. so anything can make turbulance


  2. --Increased convection.

    --Sharp edged vertical gusts, rain and hail shafts entraining and accelerating air downward, updrafts accelerated at the freezing level, and adjacent updrafts and downdrafts.

  3. Cumulonimbus are the result of very active vertical airflows, with exchange of humidity. Warm air rises, and going up will cool, water vapor will condense, and the colder air will then go down. All this swirling motion causes turbulence. Even large airliners will avoid flying through cumulonimbus, as lost of nasty things can occur: lightnings, hail, icing, and violent turbulences.

  4. Pilots are not allowed to fly in some Cumulonimbus clouds b/c of windshear
