  1. Because the cops and city workers are sick and tired of picking up your pieces and brains from the asphalt after you go throug the windshield.

    That's why.

  2. This law is basically for EMTs and anyone else who winds up at the scene of an accident. They don't want to have to go looking for your body when it gets thrown out during a crash.

  3. Well its the law as you know and everyone has told you the same but various fatalities and injuries caused by wearing seat-belts.

Potentially lethal injuries such as crushed sternum and paralyzing neck injuries are common in high-speed collisions.

Chest injury may cause cardiac arrest, lung bruises are amongst the most common causes of death by seat-belts especially for people of weak heart such as the elderly who can also suffer a heart attack and not be able to free from the seat-belt in order to get to help.

In neck injury cases, the immense pressure from a high-speed impact can cause a seat-belt wearer's head to accelerate forward suddenly while the body is restrained, potentially causing paralyzing injuries.

So in my opinion it should be left up to the individual.

  4. If you do not wear a seat belt, you could fly through the windshield and be turned into spaghetti sauce when you hit a truck, brick wall, whatever.  That is a horrible sight.  You do not have the right to subject another human being to that sight.  What if the first vehicle on the scene has children as passengers?  What if your children, or your parents had to see you splattered and unrecognizable as anything other than fresh squashed hamburger?  You do not have the right to subject another human being to the job of picking your body parts up with a shovel.   Wear your d**n seat belt.  Personally, if you want to kill yourself, I don't care, but I don't want your dead unbelted body flying into my car.  You want to know why some police officers treat you rudely when they catch you without seatbelts?  It is because they have seen the remains of too many people, the children and parents of bereft survivors, splattered like that.

  5. It is the age-old question: how to compel people to act responsibly, even if is uncomfortable or unfashionable?

As long as people demand that their government pay for medical and long-term care services in the event of tragic un- or under-insured accidents, then I think it's fair that government driving regulations require seat belt use.

  6. Unfortunately people that are too ignorant to wear seatbelts end up disabled and us taxpayers end up footing the bill.

Personally, I think that people that don't want to wear seatbelts should be required to have an extra insurance policy that covers full 24 hour care for the rest of their life when they are incapacitated.  Then the state could issue a different color plate to show that they are fully insured and don't have to wear seatbelts and are Darwin certified.   Also, they could do the same thing for morons that don't want to wear helmets when riding motorcycles.  Maybe you will get a chance to get nominated to win one of the prestigious Darwin's Awards.

I really don't give a rats **** if you are injured or totally disabled in an accident for being too stupid to wear a seatbelt (or helmet while riding a motorcycle) at least fill out an organ donors card.

  7. I guess as long as you're in the car alone, you shouldn't have any issues with it.  But if you're riding with someone else it's a little selfish to not wear your seatbelt for it you went flying around the car in the event of an accident, you could kill the other people.

  8. The government owns the roads, they make the rules.  End of story.

  9. Sure, as long as you sign a document stating that the taxpayers aren't going to be responsible for your long-term medical care.

  10. Lets start with this..I agree with you.  Mature adults should know whats right and wrong-safe or unsafe.  If so, then why do so many drink to excess and get in their cars AND BUCKLE THEIR SEAT BELTS?  The main reason that Public Safety Officials got legislation to pass seat belt laws arises from the FAILURE of federal government to regulate auto makers.  they can tell them what fuel emission restrictions to employ but they can't or won't make EVERY VEHICLE EQUIPED WITH AUTOMATIC SEAT BELT CLOSURE.  Granted, some auto do have them in place.  You get into the car and the seat belt automatically forms around you.  But the National Safey Council discovered that the seat belt system itself was unreliable at times of extreme impact (when you need it most to keep from being ejected from the car.  And, if your door comes open the system unsecures the belt.  If the door is jamed and cannot be opened then you have to cut the belt to get out.  It became impractical for the government to make it mandatory until a more secure and reliable source of automatic belt is designed.  So in the interest of Public Safety we have seat belt laws.  In my case I don't use them.  I have a severe, chronic phobia concerning seat belts and the inability to free ones self from them.  To many helicopter crashes-burn scars, etc.  I am waiting for a ticket so I can challenge it at a higher court.  I do insist that my passengers buckle up.  I do not need the insurance money that badly.

  11. To take your logic one more step, you may as well ask, "shoudn't a grown man decide whether or not he wants to purchase insurance, or acquire a license, or drive with no pants on?"

Shouldn't a grown man decide whether or not to cross an intersection against a red light, as long as he looks both ways and decides it's safe?  Shouldn't a grown man dedide how drunk he can be before it is not safe to drive?

Some laws are written to protect people from each other.  Some are written to protect some people from themselves.

  12. We live in a society that seeks to protect the people from idiot humans.

Personally I think that if someone is stopped by the police and found not to be wearing a seat belt, or under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and in violation of other rules of safety to protect all drivers on the highway, the vehicle should be confiscated and taken to scrap yard to be melted down.  That in addition to fines and jail time for placing other people at risk.  Also their insurance company should compensate other people, not the person whose carelessness caused the accident, and lawyers should refuse to take their case.

However, anyone can make a mistake, so we make allowances for people who are habitual risks but claim to have made a mistake when they get caught.

The reality is that we have people who get themselves into accidents, and they are maimed & other people try to save them.  The medical expenses can be catastrophic.

  13. no. seat belts are for peoples safety. u should wear them at all times while riding in a vehicle. Wearing seat belts can safe your life no joke.

  14. Insurance companies lobbied for this rule in order to cut down on the high amount of payouts they had. It is supposed to help keep our premiums down but when I get my bill, I can't see it!

  15. i'd rather wear the seatbelt than to be thrown out the car.
