  1. It's in an area that is particularly prone to powerful low pressure systems that spin up over the north Pacific Ocean, especially in the Fall and Winter.  These lows generate very strong winds and subsequent big waves that can travel great distances.  The famous huge waves that impact the northern shores of Hawaii are generated from these powerful north Pacific lows.
