Why is western music so dominated by the guitar?

Why is it that 90% of music produced today involves the guitar? Is it just that it's an easy instrument to play badly (ie: possible to write 'catchy' songs with minimal talent)? Or is it something else?

  1. Its not that its easy to play badly, anyone can do that, its hard to play well, and everyone is trying to be the best they can.  it also is a great form to be creative, catchy is just a byproduct of creativity.

  2. Why?  Because it's teh s*x!

It has an amazing timbre, is so expressionate in a melange of so many different ways, and it's so versatile and looks good!

Mmm, guitar - my love <3

  3. The guitar is without a doubt the most versatile instrument out there next to the human voice (which you may have noticed is the dominant instrument in almost all forms of music). It's popularity comes from its ability to fit into thousands of different styles and genres. It's not just western music either. the guitar is prominent in all forms of rock, ska, punk, reggae, instrumental, country, and even some hip hop. This makes it a pretty worldwide instrument.

  4. most country music is not played with just a guitar it is also played with a dobro which sounds like a guitar. Most people like a guitar or base. It could also be a violin maybe your ears are not use to country music and can not tell the difference between the string instruments.

  5. It's the easiest instrument to provide melody with. Also, it's very versatile and compact. Plus, a lot of people see the guitar as a very attractive instrument, so it's popular with younger people.
