If you listen to any news at all, they talk about different areas all over the world. If you don't know where it is, you are going to know nothing about world events. Do you know where the Olympics are this year? You may not care now, but you will in years to come when you are out of school, if you're not all ready. Believe me.

Over the weekend, Russian forces started bombing Georgia over Georgia's actions in South Ossetia.

If you don't know where those places are and what the history of the region is, you can't possibly know whether the event is significant or not, and therefore cannot have an informed opinion about what the US should do about it.
