  1. because the ground around your basement insulates the room. ground temp. stays constant. no sun can heat the dirt beneath the surface layer. so thats why its always colder in the summer.

  2. It's not exposed to the sun and it's underground. Because the sun doesn't heat it as much as the main floor, it is colder in the basement.

  3. heat always rises cool air goes down

  4. Heat rises remember.  And basements made of concrete cool and warm slower because of their density.  Also they are darker than other rooms and that also aids in the cooling process.

  5. Although it is true that heat rises, the MAIN reason why your basement is KEPT cold in the summer is the ground. The ground is cooler than the air in summer. In winter, the opposite is true. This is why, in winter, the basement is often just as warm as upstairs, despite the fact that heat rises.

10 ft below the surface, the ground temperature tends to be the average of the annual air temperature in your area, but a few degrees higher or lower depending on season. There is a long lag. At that depth, the maximum is reached around September and the minimum around March.

  6. Because there is no sun and it is darker down there.

  7. Because heat rises.  You might want to try to close the vents off upstairs to force warm air down.
