Why isn't Alexander Mogilny eligible for the hhof?

Question

I was looking at a list of players with 1000+ pts in their nhl careers and it also had their induction/eligibility year for the hockey hall of fame, but I noticed that Alexander Mogilny's said not eligible. Just wondering why. Thanks!

It IS three years. But he has not OFFICIALLY been retired for three years. That is why he is not eligible. It is based on when Mogilny filed (or files) his retirement paperwork, but since he last played. Until he officially says, "I'm retired," his three years won't begin.

I am pretty sure Tomjc43 is right and he was not officially retired (paperwork) until a while after he last played.  There is couple players that this will come up about in the near future.

he is my favorite player of all time. he will get there eventually. he never oficially retired. he got hurt. was still on the roster, then just kind of faded out. he will be eligible in a couple years.

That's interesting because I saw an interview with Bryan Trottier (who is in the HoF) where he said that he never did and never will sign the retirement papers. So, obviously there is some leeway on that.

He hasn't filed his retirement papers yet - he still believes he can play in the NHL

Mogilny's year of eligibility is next year based on the last year he played. However because of the strange way his career ended he might have delayed his retirement until later.
