Of course there is a "King Consort"... Lord Darnely was King Consort of Scotland and Phillip II was King Consort of England.

  1. Because a king outranks a queen, and Elizabeth is Queen regnant (as opposed to consort).  If Phillip were given the title of King, he would outrank the ruling Queen of England...clearly unacceptable.

  2. Actually, he would properly be known as the "Queen's Consort".  He could not be the King's Consort because he is of the wrong s*x.  Had the roles been reversed and he were the King of England, she could either be crowned queen or simply known as the "King's Consort".  He cannot be King, because technically a king outranks the queen, and the title belongs to Queen Elizabeth since she inherited it through her family.  Prince Phillip would have been barred, seeing as he was Greek Orthodox and converted to the Church of England.  He is simply a Greek prince, royalty without a country at that.  Fortunately for him, he married well.  Same set up with Queen Victoria and her hubbie Prince Albert (as in the can).  He was a German prince, albeit at least Lutheran and Protestant at least.  He couldn't be the King for exactly the same reasons.

  3. There's no such thing as a "king Consort."  He would be styled as the Queen's consort and she hasn't elevated his position to that yet.

  4. Because the UK have Prince Consorts not King Consorts. England nor the UK have never had a King Consort (the only non-titled Prince Consort before Prince Philip was Queen Anne's husband.

Prince Albert (Queen Victoria's husband) was a Prince by birth (so was Prince Philip but he'd become a naturalised British Citizen and therefore had lost his Greek and Danish royal titles).

  5. HE IZ!!!

  6. Actually, he could have been king, but when Elizabeth inherited the throne, she chose not to make him king.

  7. There were plans for him to get this, or a similar, title. But his uncle, Lord Louis Mountbatten (who had engineered the marriage of his nephew to Elizabeth) tried to insist on the full title of 'King'.

This was unacceptable. Nobody trusted 'Emperor' Louis then. Nobody trusts Phil the Greek now.

  8. There is one ruling monarch on the british throne.  If male, he is titled King, and his wife can be called Queen because the title "King" is higher than that of "Queen". If the ruling monarch is female, she is Queen and her husband is Prince Consort.  The title of the spouse is never equal to the monarch.
