Why isn't Team GB called Team UK?

The term Great Britain (GB) does not include Northern Ireland whereas United Kingdom does. As the squad includes Northern Irish athletes should it not be renamed Team UK.

  1. good question...im from northern ireland and your right there are northern irish athletes...here we have dual nationality ... we can chose if we want an irish or british passport..the athletes have a choice then can go to the ireland or GB team....i dont however consider myself to be irish as ireland and northern ireland are two different countries....i have a british passport and supported the northern irish athletes on the GB team.... :)

    and to the t**t that said the uk includes the republic it DOESNT!!!

  6. Cause GB includes scotland, englaand, northern Ireland and Wales.

    Team UK would need to inlcude Republic of Ireland too!

  7. Yes it was a political faux pas made by someone who called it team GB instead of of Team UK.

    So sorry Northern Ireland we love you too. Hopefully this error of judgement will be rectified by 2012. And that Alex Salmond does not convince the Scots that Independence is the way forward. It will set Scotland and the UK back almost 500 years.

    Germany learnt many years ago that separate empires do not work especially when you share the same small island as we do.

Because   the people only remember N.Ireland when N.Ireland wins.For example N.Ireland beating England in the football  world cup recently,  Then its part of Uk again, Or mary Peters winning gold in Olympics is part of team Uk  suddenly. Basically its ignorance  and lack  of education on the organisers. Who  did the great Chris Hoy just beat to get three golds by 0.0005 seconds. Jason  from N.Ireland  who  got silver.Never mentioned.
