What are the different companies to get biodeisel from?

Is there any competition?

How do we fix this problem?

  1. I get biodiesel where I live.  Autogas propane in Burnaby, B.C., Canada has it but they don't get it from crop sources. It is also priced close to regular gas there.

  2. Biofuels are causing massive problems with the cost of food.  We don't have enough food to feed the world, let alone burn it for fuel.

  3. Okay; newsflash; biodeisel isn't being sold because for one if they sold it, it would make food prices go up and no one could afford food and we'd be worse off than we are now with food prices even higher than they are now. Second biodeisel dosn't work that well; the best thing is for people to have solar powered cars. That wouldn't use any resources really and wouldn't cause food prices to go up. So you might want to think before you go saying things you have no clue about.

  4. Maybe because it's not efficient?  Yep, that's it.

  5. It is being sold, and it is hideously expensive when compared to petroleum diesel.

There are currently 3 choices for making biodiesel:

1st, recycling used vegetable oil.  This is really the cheapest, but it isn't commercially viable.  There aren't enough restaurants discarding enough oil to supply even a small percentage of the demand.

2nd, using food crops.  Soy is a popular choice.  The problem here is that having a dual demand on the crop production runs up prices, both for the fuel and for the food.

3rd, using non-food crops.  The problem here is that the crops still have to be grown.  You can plant for biofuels instead of planting for food, but that reduces the overall production of food crops, and food prices climb.  Or, you can whack down existing rainforests.

What's needed is a plant, rich in oil, that will grow well in soil not suited for food crops.  When that comes around, biodiesel may become a truly green alternative.
