Why isn't college free?

Well, not 'free' but payed for by tax dollars?

The more education people have, the more taxes they will pay, so it would even out in the end, right? without people having to go into so much debt?

All of you people that believe college should be payed for by those that want to go are part of the "I'm better than you are because I have more money" group, and you make me sick. That's what is wrong with this country today. I'm white, tried to get into a vocational school for automotive mechanics, and attempted to do it by getting a federal loan without my parents assistance. You know what I was told? I was told that because I'm white and my parents make too much, I can't qualify for the loan or any grants. And I had a B+ average in highschool. What gives? What does my parents' income have to do with me trying to make something of myself?
