  1. Western society thinks if it can't be measured it isn't useful. That's why they support the useless IQ tests which quantifies "intelligence".

  2. There is an excellent book on "Emotional Intelligence." It is by D. Goleman, puiblished in 1995 by Bantam. The author offers five indicators of Emotional Intelligence.

    1. Emotional self-awareness

    2. Managing emotions

    3. Motivation: Harnessing emotions productively

    4. Empathy: Reading Emotions

    5. Handlilng relationships.

It's probably fair to state that emotional intelligence isn't discussed more often because people are a) are unaware of the complexity of this ingredient in their makeup; and b) it requires work to understand and improve -- there's no magic pill or Dr. Phil to hand out a quick fix.

  3. I agree with Bitchenahalf.

Unfortunately I think the fact that so many people ignore it is one of the largest culprits plaguing our society today. It's the cause of so much unnecessary conflict, arguments, tension, hurt, pains, revenge, everything.

I think it is very important, and often NOT talked about, because such a thing I think often has repercussions or costs in society today. Choosing to adhere to the 'moral choice' or doing something not to hurt someones feelings or to maintain the emotional well-being of another is usually the less profitable option.

Just a part of life I suppose.

  4. Sadly, emotional intelligence is under-valued in American society.  As an emotionally intelligent person, I like to think it's important.  But, frankly, it may only be valued by me (and hopefully those with whom I choose to spend my time).  I'm okay with that.  I recently graduated with an advanced degree in a helping profession and will now even be getting paid (in a way) for my emotional intelligence.  It's just not widely appreciated in an overt way.
