Why isn't grass engineered to grow only 3 inches for your yard so you don't have to mow it?

  1. For the same reason it's not engineered to be purple, of course!


  2. Pretty much if you want that, you would get the artificial stuff. And when you think about it, there would be chemicals in your grass which might have negative effects on kids or animals who feel the need to eat the grass.

  4. you can get growth inhibitor for your lawn to slow its rate of growth.  but that will come at the expense of some aspect of the health of the turf I would imagine

They are working on it.  A few years ago a dwarf tall fescue was released.......Bonsai......I think was the name.  What it is is a plant where the new cells do not elongate after initiation.  The whole plant is much greener as the chlorophyll is more concentrated.  Alas, it is also more picky about growing conditions.

    Growth inhibitors are used by some professional grounds maintenance people.......it's tricky to use as it can burn the plant.  Give them time to get it right.

  6. That type of grass is known as artificial turf.
