  1. Very good question. I can see some cities are making an effort to put in better public transportation which would significantly lower our dependance on using cars to get around and cut down traffic jams (which I am sure wastes millions of gallons of gas a day), but it seems to me a lot of places just aren't acting fast enough.

I think more efficient public mass transportation is the way to go. Even more affordable options on long distance travel on busses and passenger trains could be an option. Many countries already have these options readily available. The US could learn a lot from them!

Perhaps the next step is to ration gasoline. Maybe the fellow above will invest in a better Ipod instead of wasting gas to listen to the stereo.

  2. I paid over $800 for a high quality sound system for my truck and I love to drive around nowhere just to listen to a music CD

yea, I waste fuel just so I can listen to my sound system, but I paid a lot of money for it and its my choice that I pay a lot for gas, and I can afford it.

  3. Let's start with your definition of "wasted fuel", shall we?

Only after that is defined can we discuss how to lessen it.

If you mean through evaporation, most underground storage tanks actually have a floating top to keep it to a minimum, and newer gas have a closed system that recovers any vapor.

If by wasted fuel you mean any trip made that doesn't meet your definition of "necessary" that would be almost impossible to regulate.

So, modify your question and set definitions and parameters, and perhaps you will get an answer or two.
